Why do swimming pools use mirror-polished stainless steel?

You may have seen that most swimming pool internal balustrades are made from 316 A4 Stainless Steel with a Mirror-Polished finish, but why is this?

Not only does mirror-polished stainless steel offer a more aesthetically pleasing look, but it also enhances the visual appeal of the surroundings. This is particularly beneficial in high-corrosive environments such as marine areas and swimming pools, where the beauty of the design is as important as its functionality.

Mirror polishing involves gradually polishing the stainless steel with various grits of abrasive belts and high-speed mops/compounds to achieve a mirror-like finish.

THE FINER DETAILS:

When looking through a microscope at the material's surface, stainless steel will have higher and lower peaks and troughs within the face of the steel. Using various abrasives reduces the material's grain and gives it a brighter, shineier finish.

MIRROR VS SATIN

Satin, otherwise known as dull, has more of a matt or brushed style. This material has a deeper grain and is often considered a more contemporary architectural finish.

Mirrors, or bright polished, have much lower and smoother grain.

Contrary to belief, if stainless steel begins to rust, it's not the steel itself but the contaminants from the environment that have damaged the passive layer and collected within the grain. This is why mirror polish is the most corrosion-resistant. The smoother the finish, the quicker the material gets removed from its surface, providing a durable and long-lasting solution.
